BAGUIO CITY- The 9th YMCA CUP, Inter-School Elementary and Secondary Invitational Basketball Tournament commenced last Saturday, September 5, 2015 at the YMCA Gym here. Gracing the annual event was the officers and members of the YMCA Board and staff headed by its President Engr. Rex L. Ludaes as guest of honour and speaker.
Corporate Secretary Ptr. Robert Sison gave the opening remarks as General Secretary Aida Aquino made the declaration of the opening of the tournament with Auditor and PE & Sports Committee Chairman Jerome Gawidan doing the ceremonial toss for the opening games.
First to see action on opening day was the High School bracket “B” Developmental teams between the Saint Louis Laboratory High School “Cubs” and the Star Colleges, Inc. ball club, as the game ensued, the cubs made an early full court press defense to control the pace of the game posting a 23-10 blast on the first canto that carried on to the last minutes of the fourth canto to win the game by a 34 point lead 81-47.
Meanwhile, Easter College Inc. Elementary school also registered their first win on opening day against San Jose Elementary School for bracket “A” who dominated the boards to register a 21-0, 8-4, 3-18 and a 0-7 blast quarter scores to win the game 50-16 at the end of the fourth quarter.
An exciting match on the third game also ensued with the SLU-LHS Cubs Varsity going up against the Baguio City Science Foundation Apollo’s varsity team. The cubs early in the first canto displayed a wall like defense to lead the game 23-14, however, the apollo’s overcome the cubs defense on the second canto of play limiting the cubs to a ten point conversion to make the apollo’s in the game trailing by a point on the second canto 33-32.
On the other hand, the cubs maintaining their composure also controlled the pace of the game to lead the apollo’s by three points at the end of the third canto 49-52, that continued to the last quarter despite rainbow attempts from the apollos’ ending the game at the fourth canto buzzer with a six point deficit to win 71-65.
