BAGUIO CITY – The Cordillera office of the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA-CAR) disclosed that the total population of the region as of May 1, 2020 was 1,797,660 based on the 2020 Census of Population and Housing (CPH).
The PSA-CAR stated that the total population of the Cordillera accounted for about 1.6 percent of the Philippine population in 2020.
Further, the total population of the region in 2020 is higher by 0.08 million compared with the region’s population of 1.72 million in 2015 and by 0.18 million compared with the population of 1.62 million in 2010.
Among the 6 provinces comprising the cordillera, Benguet had the biggest population in 2020 with 460,683 persons followed by Abra with 250,985 persons, Kalinga with 229,570 persons, Ifugao with 207,498 persons and Mountain Province with 158,200 persons.
On the other hand, Apayao had the smallest population with 124,366 persons based on the results of the latest census that was conducted.
The PSA-CAR stipulated that Baguio City, the only highly urbanized city in the region, recorded a population of 366,358 persons.
According to the PSA-CAR, the population of Benguet and Baguio City comprise 46 percent of the total population of the region which means that 5 out of 10 Cordillerans live in Benguet and Baguio.
The Cordillera is composed of 1 highly urbanized city, 1 component city, 75 municipalities and 1,178 barangays.
Among the cities, excluding Baguio, and municipalities in the region, the largest in terms of population size is La Trinidad, Benguet with 137,404 persons followed by Tabuk City, Kalinga with 121,033 persons, Itogon Benguet with 61,498 persons and Bangued, Abra with 50,382 persons.
The PSA-CAR claimed that the 5 least populous municipalities in the region are located in Abra where Daguioman had the smallest population with only 2,019 persons followed by Bucloc with 2,395 persons, and Langiden with 3,576 persons.
Of the 1,178 barangays in the region, the largest in terms of population size is Irisan, Baguio City with 36,562 persons followed by Pico, La Trinidad, Benguet with 25,790 persons, Bulanao, Tabuk City, Kalinga with 21,522 persons, Balili, La Trinidad, Benguet with 17,756 persons and Camp 7, Baguio city with 13,875 persons.
The PSA-CAR revealed that the top 5 barangays with the least population are all found in Baguio City with Bagong Lipunan market area having the least population with 28 persons, Harrison-Claudio Carantes with 30 persons, Malcolm Square-Perfecto-Jose Abad Santos with 63 persons, Upper Magsaysay with 68 persons and Kabayanihan with 104 persons.
The PSA-CAR recently released the results of the 2020 CPH to provide local governments, concerned government agencies and other concerned stakeholders with the data that will serve as a guide in the planning and formulation of programs, projects and activities in their respective areas of jurisdiction.
