LUNA, Apayao – The Department of Science and Technology-Science Education Institute (DOST-SEI) has awarded scholarships to four yApayao students through the Bringing Education in Science and Technology for Indigenous People (BEST for IP) program.
Along with their parents or legal guardians, the scholars attended an orientation via Zoom on May 24, 2024.
The BEST for IP program assists high-achieving students from indigenous communities who demonstrate strong competence in science and technology. Selection criteria included membership in an indigenous community and academic excellence.
Among the successful applicants is Brenda Gayle Bayani, a graduate of Apayao Science High School (ASHS) in Luna. She plans to pursue a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree at Mariano Marcos State University.
Precious Lara Culso, also ASHS, initially intended to study Bachelor of Science in Respiratory Therapy but has shifted to Bachelor of Science in Medical Technology at Cagayan State University in Tuguegarao City.
Krizzy Carl Basan and Jan Lexter Coilan were also awarded scholarships by the DOST-SEI.
The orientation covered various aspects of the scholarship program. The scholars signed the Scholarship Policies and Agreement and took their oaths as scholars during the Zoom conference.
Scholarship privileges include tuition and other school fees up to PhP40,000 per academic year, learning materials and/or connectivity allowance of PhP10,000 per academic year, a monthly living allowance of PhP7,000, a clothing allowance of PhP1,000 (for the first semester of the first year only), a transportation allowance for one economy-class roundtrip fare for those studying outside their home province, a thesis allowance of PhP10,000, a graduation allowance of PhP1,000, and group accident and health insurance premiums.
