BAGUIO CITY – A Grade V pupil of the Pacday Quinio Elementary School in Asin grabbed the limelight when she snared first runner-up honors in the recently concluded National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (DRRM) Mascot Design Making Contest held at the Bulwagan ng Karunungan, Department of Education Complex, last May 19, 2017.
The mascot design of Sherif Immatong Mendizabal of the Baguio-based school representing the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR) landed in second place behind the design of the National Capital Region (NCR).
On the other hand, the mascot design of Region II or the Cagayan Valley landed in third place after the judging of the numerous entries to the prestigious competition.
Some 12 finalists from the different regions of the country participated submitted entries to this national competition spearheaded by the Office of the Civil Defense (OCD) and the Department of Education.
Among the criteria for judging were originality – 30 percent, child-friendly design – 30 percent, theme – 20 percent, and visual impact – 20 percent.
Mayor Mauricio G. Domogan commended Mr.Mendizabal for his achievement in the highly competitive national contest, saying that his second place finish means that local public schools are capable of producing top calibre pupils who can excel in local, regional, national and international competitions.
According to him, Mendizabal’s recent achievement has brought honor and pride to the city and will serve as an inspiration for other upcoming artists to strive for the best in their artworks capable of serving as entries in various competitions in the future.
Mendizabal was coached by his teacher Jayson Piluden Quinopez.
