SAN FERNANDO CITY, La Union – House helpers, or “kasambahays,” play a critical role in Filipino households, yet many remain unaware of their rights regarding compensation and benefits.
To address this gap, the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) conducted an information campaign at Robinsons Mall in Calasiao, Pangasinan recently.
The initiative, dubbed “#PARAKAYK: Karapatan Alamin, Kasambahay Kamustahin”, aimed to empower kasambahays by informing them about their entitlements under the Employees’ Compensation (EC) Program.
Over 100 attendees, including kasambahays and barangay officials, learned about Republic Act No. 10361, the “Domestic Workers Act” or “Batas Kasambahay,” which guarantees internationally recognized working conditions for domestic workers.
The Employees’ Compensation Commission (ECC) highlighted that kasambahays, as mandatory Social Security System members, are entitled to EC benefits in case of work-related sickness, injury, illness, or death.
Lawyer Kaima Via Velasquez, ECC executive director, emphasized the importance of social security through the EC Program in protecting kasambahays under Batas Kasambahay.
“Kasambahays who are unable to work due to work-related accidents or illnesses can claim sickness or disability benefits, medical care, caregiver allowance, and rehabilitation services,” Velasquez explained.
“In case of death due to work-related causes, their beneficiaries are entitled to monthly pensions and funeral benefits,” she added.
Velasquez stressed the importance of education and advocacy in ensuring every worker is treated fairly.
Participants expressed appreciation for learning about their rights and benefits under the EC Program.
The EC Program orientation for kasambahays is a significant step towards ensuring their well-being and dignity.
The ECC remains committed to promoting worker welfare and improving the labor sector.
The commission looks forward to collaborating with government agencies to create a more informed and inclusive workforce. (PIA Region 1)
