LA TRINIDAD, Benguet – The Benguet Sports Complex in Wangal, La Trinidad, Benguet, came alive with enthusiasm and anticipation on April 23, 2024, as it hosted the much-anticipated 9th Regional Organic Agriculture Congress. With the theme “Kabuhayang OA, Kinabukasang OK: PGS pinalakas para sa Bagong Pilipinas,” the event aimed to unite farmers, residents, and stakeholders in a shared commitment to promote organic farming practices across the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR).
Governor Melchor Diclas opened the event with a warm welcome, greeting all attendees and expressing gratitude for their presence. His words set the tone for a day filled with insightful discussions, valuable networking opportunities, and inspiring showcases of organic agriculture.
Representing Congressman Eric Go Yap, Kristine Molintas emphasized the significance of events like the Agriculture Congress in bridging the gap between policymakers and the farming community. She highlighted the government’s commitment to understanding the needs of farmers and fostering collaboration between the Department of Agriculture and national agencies to support organic farming initiatives.
She also encouraged the farmers to take this chance to raise their concerns and needs when it comes to farming. “Kaya sana in this congress please take this chance na magtanong din po kayo, mag submit ng feedback at magsuggest ng solution, dahil pagdating sa farming kayo ang pinaka magaling diyan hindi kami, kayo ang nakakaalam.”
Atty. Jennilyn Dawayan, Executive Regional Director of the Department of Agriculture Regional Field Office 1, underscored organic agriculture’s undeniable importance and impact on producers and consumers. She emphasized that organic farming is not merely a passing trend but a fundamental aspect of ensuring the well-being of individuals and communities.
Atty. Dawayan lauded the progress made in the region, with five organic certified bodies under the Participatory Guarantee System (PGS) in CAR and 35 PGS initiatives in Region 1.
She called for continued efforts to strengthen the bond between farmers and consumers, “Let us push forward to strengthen the bond between the farmer and consumers to the PGS by affirming the integrity of every seed sown and every harvest.”
Governor Melchor Diclas, echoing the sentiments of appreciation, recognized the organic farmers of Benguet for their dedication and contribution to sustainable agriculture. He emphasized the importance of government support, acknowledging the Department of Agriculture and Regional Executive Director Atty. Jennilyn Dawayan for their efforts in organizing the congress and providing resources to promote organic horticulture.
Governor Diclas highlighted the significance of such events in showcasing organic products to the market, thereby boosting the morale and motivation of local farmers.
The congress was attended by a diverse audience, including government officials, representatives from various agencies, stakeholders, and exhibitors. This broad representation underscored the region’s widespread interest in and support for organic agriculture.
A notable highlight of the program was the recognition of Local Government Units (LGUs) with Accredited Participatory Guarantee System Organic Certification Bodies (PGS OCBs). This acknowledgment emphasized the crucial role of local government involvement in driving the adoption of organic farming practices and ensuring the integrity of organic produce.
The event concluded with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and an exhibit tour, allowing attendees to explore the array of products cultivated by Cordilleran farmers. The exhibit showcased the region’s richness and diversity of organic agriculture, from organic fruits and vegetables to artisanal goods. The exhibit remained open to visitors from April 23 to April 25, 2024, serving as a platform to celebrate the achievements of local farmers and inspire continued support for sustainable agriculture and community development initiatives.
The 9th Regional Organic Agriculture Congress served as a testament to the collective commitment of stakeholders towards promoting organic farming practices and fostering a sustainable agricultural ecosystem in the Cordillera Administrative Region.
