TABUK CITY, Kalinga – The City Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) reported that Tabuk City generated a total of 6,154 tons of residual waste in 2023, disposed of in the engineered sanitary landfill situated in Barangay Dilag.
This report was presented during the first quarter meeting of the City Ecological Solid Waste Management Board, attended by various agencies in the city on March 20, 2024, at the Golden Fields Hotel.
CENRO Assistant Head Georgia Padalla said that there were a total of 3,022 loads of disposal in the sanitary landfill, with an average of 16.86 tons of residual waste being disposed per day.
The CENRO reported that the periods of March, May, and August had the highest volume of waste disposed in the landfill last year.
According to Padalla, the landfill has now exceeded its capacity due to the high volume of generated waste and they are recommending for all stakeholders to find alternative means to reduce the amount of waste produced in the city.
To address this, the members of the board proposed for the allocation of funds for the construction of Cell 2 of the sanitary landfill to accommodate the increasing waste.
To decrease disposal contribution, the barangays were urged to manage their waste properly, especially biodegradable materials, by providing composting facilities or managing their dumping sites.
In addition, it was advised that every household practice composting their food scraps and other biodegradable trash at home.
To further reduce the amount of garbage produced, everyone is urged to purchase goods that women’s organizations and the Bureau of Jail Management sell that have been upcycled from garbage. By Ian Jefrey Addatu
