BONTOC, Mountain Province – In an effort to contain the spread of the African Swine Fever (ASF) virus in the municipality, the municipal government, through the Office of the Municipal Agriculturist (OMAg), conducted disinfection and distribution of disinfectants to backyard hog raisers in Barangay Bontoc Ili on February 24, 2022, at the Barangay Hall of Bontoc Ili.
A total of 35 backyard raisers received 160 ml of disinfectant which is to be diluted in 16 liters of water.
Personnel from the OMAg gave instructions on the proper dilution of the given disinfectants.
Meanwhile, one pigpen was also disinfected in order to demonstrate the proper way of disinfecting the area.
Mayor Franklin Odsey encouraged local hog raisers to report to their respective barangays if any sign or symptom was observed in their swine.
“I appeal for everyone’s cooperation in containing and minimizing the effects of ASF in our Ili ay Kalalaychan. Immediately report to your respective barangays or the OMAg if any symptoms were observed for proper testing,” he added.
According to the US National Library of Medicine, African swine fever (ASF) causes huge economic losses and is one of the most dangerous diseases of pigs. The disease has been known for almost 100 years but an effective vaccine or treatment is still unavailable and that only proper biosecurity measures, including disinfection are being applied in order to prevent outbreaks.
Eight active substances, i.e., formaldehyde, sodium hypochlorite, caustic soda, glutaraldehyde, phenol, benzalkonium chloride, potassium peroxymonosulfate and acetic acid, were tested, in order to confirm their effectiveness against ASF virus.
