BAGUIO CITY – The Cordillera office of the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA-CAR) reported the total livestock and poultry inventory in the region declined last year compared to the prevailing inventory the previous year.
In a comprehensive report, the PSA-CAR noted the total inventory of carabao in the region as of July 1, 2016, was estimated at 86,864 heds which is lower by 0.9 percent compared to the 2015 inventory while the inventory of carabaos in backyard farms decreased by 1.2 percent accounting for 98.9 percent of the total population of carabao.
On the other hand, carabao stocks in commercial farms went down by 3.4 percent last year compared to the reported inventory the previous year.
The PSA-CAR report added the region’s total inventory of cattle as of July 1, 2016, was estimated at 59,936 heads which were raised in backyard farms while only 12.3 percent were found in commercial farms.
As of July 1, 2016, the PSA-CAR bared the total swine population in the region stood at 201,965 heads which is 5.7 percent lower than the previous year’s inventory of 213,998 heads and stocks in backyard farms decreased by 5.1 percent.
Likewise, swine stocks in commercial farms also went down by 30.7 percent compared to the 2015 levels and about 98.1 percent of the total stocks were raised in backyard farms and the rest were in commercial farms.
During the same period, the PSA-CAR cited the inventory of goat was 66,208 heads which is lower than 7.3 percent from the previous year’s inventory of 71,407 heads and almost 99.9 percent of the total goat population was raised in backyard farms while a negligible 0.1 percent or only 62 heads of goat were raised in commercial farms.
The PSA-CAR stated total chicken inventory as of July 1, 2016, was estimated at 1,409,857 birds which is 9.9 percent lower than the previous year’s total inventory of 1,565,409 birds.
Moreover, the inventory of native or improved chicken and layer recorded respective declines of 11.8 percent and 2.2 percent while broiler chicken inventory posted an increase of 317.9 percent compared to the same period in 2015.
According to the PSA-CAR, the total duck inventory in the region as of July 1, 2016, was 225,520 birds which increased by 8.9 percent from the previous year’s inventory of 207,081 birds and no duck commercial farm was noted in the region.
The inventory of animal population refers to the actual number of domesticated animals present in the farm at a specific reference date while livestock refers to farm animals kept or raised for consumption, work or leisure.
The PSA-CAR explained poultry is separate as a distinct group of farm animals and for purposes of censuses and surveys, livestock covers only those that are tended and raised by an operator while livestock or poultry production refers to the volume of indigenous animals disposed of for slaughter plus animals exported.
