BAGUIO CITY – The Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) recently inaugurated the National Fiber Backbone program, spanning across various regions of Luzon.
DICT CAR Regional Director Reynaldo Sy, announced the said development during the Convergence of Luzon ICT Champions Conference and Exhibition 2024 with the theme ‘Pioneering Innovation in ICT for a Smarter Tomorrow.’ held at the Baguio Convention Center. This initiative set by DICT, aims to revolutionize internet connectivity in the Philippines.
He also stated that the Philippine Government, through DICT, will directly access internet bandwidth from the United States, routing it first to Baler, Aurora, then to La Union, before spreading it across the country. Baguio is among the locations identified to benefit from this forthcoming bandwidth from the U.S.A.
In addition, he declared that various provinces in the Cordillera Administrative Region, spanning from Benguet to the Mountain Province, will eventually receive bandwidth from the Philippine Government.
Sy further explained that the project’s objective is to establish the Philippine Government as the fourth major telecommunications provider. This multi-year program initiated by DICT aims to connect all Local Government Units to the Philippine Backbone, thereby ‘freeing up’ bandwidth currently monopolized by private entities, making it accessible to the public.
