DAGUPAN CITY (PIA) – The National Telecommunications Commission (NTC)-Region 1 will conduct a facilitated Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) card registration in selected remote areas in Pangasinan this week.
With the help of local government units and the telecommunication companies, the NTC-Region 1 will mount a facilitated SIM registration booth in the municipal covered court in Natividad town on February 15; San Nicolas municipal gymnasium on February 16; and at municipal event center of San Quintin on February 17 from 8a.m. to 5p.m.
Individuals who are interested to avail these services were instructed to bring their mobile phones with their SIMs to be registered.
Apart from these, they were also told to bring a government-issued identification card.
NTC-Ilocos Region legal officer Ana Minelle Maningding urged the public to register their SIM cards in accordance with Republic Act (R.A.) 11934 or the SIM Registration Act.
Under the SIM Card Registration Act, existing subscribers must register their mobile numbers with their respective telco providers within 180 days, a policy that seeks to eliminate digital fraud as all SIMs can soon be tracked.
“This is helpful to trace people behind anonymous numbers and would be of great help to law enforcement,” she said during the Philippine Information Agency-Pangasinan Information Center’s virtual presser on Tuesday.
She assured the public that the data provided by users will be safe and remain confidential.
“If there will be a breach of confidentiality, the telcos will face up to P500,000 to P4 million fine,” she said.
The SIM card registration will run until April 26, 2023.
Meanwhile, the NTC reported that SIM registration has been completed for 29,708,935 SIMs as of February 6.
Based on records provided by the NTC, the total number is 17.58% of the 168,977,773 million subscribers nationwide.
Broken down, Smart Communications Inc. reported a total of 15,314,256 SIMs registered, which is 22.52% of Smart’s 67,995,734 subscribers.
Globe Telecom Inc. recorded 12,081,280 registered, which is 13.75% of its 87,873,936 subscribers.
