BAGUIO CITY-ROC’s shallow bench with seven players defied the Beneco-Voltz charge to win in their match up in last August 27’s game during the Y’Cup elimination round at the YMCA Gym, here.
With the 106-97 victory, ROC got to post their second win while dropping Beneco to its third loss in the tournament.
The Beneco-voltz penalized with two free throws before the game gave advantage to the optometrists the leverage against the volts to open the first canto of play. ROC, however, remained cautious with their fouls due to a shallow seven man bench.
Five triples courtesy of Rene Laguit, Khing Pascual, Jay-r Paladan, and Paolo Almazora and the aggressiveness of Peter Flores and Paul Moltio, gave ROC a slight advantage, 24-22, at the end of the first.
Meanwhile, Beneco’s tall man Johnny Pascua, entered in the second and set the pace for the team’s inside play strategies but Jay-R Paladan and Peter Flores defended the boards and Nanoy Mariano gathered loose ball recoveries provided the optometrists more chances on the hoop that up their lead to six, 51-45, at halftime.
The Voltz again went inside paint through penetration to start the third but ROC’s defense became tighter as both teams answered each other’s run and end the third with ROC still up by eight, 83-75.
With continued action on the fourth quarter, Beneco-Voltz, Arvin Gamboa took the chores of charging the ROC-A defense in the shaded area. The effort materialized as the got on a run to chip off the lead to as much as five points in the dying minutes of the fourth canto.
ROC, however, got their second wind with Peter Flores and Khing Pascual controlling the offensive boards to increase the lead back to nine to end the match.
