BAGUIO CITY – On March 24, 2018, Saturday, from 8:30 pm to 9:30 pm, all 56 SM malls including SM City Baguio plus seven more in China will stage Earth Hour to inspire communities to take a stand against the indiscriminate threat of global warming and make a commitment to a low-carbon lifestyle by switching off non-essential lights.
This is the 10th year SM has supported the world’s largest public campaign for the environment.
The global theme for 2018 is “Connect to Earth” – which anchors on climate change and the steep decline of nature, emphasizing that climate change and biodiversity are two sides of the same coin.
Each SM Mall has its own version of celebrating earth hour including environmental or acoustic performances, lighting of candles, giving pledges of support for the environment from the surrounding communities, exhibiting art installations made of recycled materials, solar-powered displays, and/or glow in the dark painting/murals that shows importance of biodiversity.
Aside from supporting Earth Hour, SM has also been taking sustainability initiatives that include water recycling; air quality and flood control; solar powered rooftops and LED powered lights for energy efficiency and conservation; responsible solid waste management efforts through the regular Trash-to-Cash activities where the public can exchange specified recyclable or reusable trash for cash.
SM encourages the local government, nearby schools and everyone in the community to celebrate Earth Hour by carrying out collective efforts extensively and by using Earth Hour as a platform to showcase to the world the measures we are all taking to reduce our carbon footprint.
