A lot of the young guns have been showing off this 40th season of the Philippine Basketball Association.
In the 2015 PBA All Star game in Palawan, two young upcoming stars Terrence Romeo and Calvin Abueva lead the North squad in defeating the South squad, 166-161.
Terrence Romeo is awarded as the Most Valuable Player of the game with his 30 points and 3 rebounds while Calvin Abueva produced a monstrous stats line, 37 points, 16 rebounds and 7 assists.
This rising superstars are only at the upward trend of their career, as Romeo is only on his 2nd season while Calvin is only at his third season.
There is no doubt right now that in the near future, as near as next season, the PBA will have new faces.
1. Terrence Romeo
2015 Commissioner’s Cup Stats: 21.9 points, 4 rebounds, 2.9 assists, 42.2% 3FG
When asked about the potential of Romeo as the next face of the PBA, James Yap, the current face of the PBA, answered, “Bakit hindi (siya pwedeng sumunod sa yapak ko)? Nakikita ko naman na talagang capable din siya.” in an interview with spin.ph.
With his current performance, with good looks and of course his jaw dropping moves, Romeo is ready to take the throne of Yap. But at least one of this things needs to happen for him to be officially be the face of the PBA. First, James Yap’s game will totally deteriorate or alternatively, he will push the Batang Pier to the crown.
James Yap has been the face of the PBA not only because of his own success but also the success of his team. PBA fans will only accept a new face if he can lead his team to the crown. That is the biggest hindrance to the crowning of Romeo, but with a year of experience together with Stanley Pringle may enhance his chance of doing so next season.
2. Calvin Abueva
2015 Season Stats: 14.8 points, 10.3 rebounds, 2.5 assists, 1 steal
He is currently on an injury bug. But for sure, he is already a known figure to the PBA fans. A lot of them love him because of his energy and relentless fighting spirit although a legion of the fans also hates him because of his antics.
Whatever side you are, it doesn’t matter because that only proves how Abueva is competing right now. If Romeo is ready to be the face of the PBA, Calvin is a hand away from getting the throne as the Heart of the PBA.
The Heart of the PBA was and is always represented by the top man of the Never Say Die Ginebra San Miguel. But if Ginebra continues to establish a main cog and fail in winning the crown, fans will might slowly accept Abueva as the player who really plays his heart out.
