BAGUIO CITY – Resident urban gardeners have until April 15 to submit entries to the 2018 garden contest for cash prizes and recognition during the farmers’ month this May and charter celebration in September.
The announcement came from the office of Councilor Leandro Yangot, Jr. which spearheaded the endeavor, in coordination with the City Mayor’s Office, Department of Agriculture (DA-CAR) and private institutions.
The top prize is P25,000; with P15,000 and P5,000 as second and third prize, respectively; while P2,500 goes to seven farmer gardeners each as consolation prizes.
The participant should provide first and last name, home address and phone number with a 100-word description and photos of the garden, which would then be visited by the board of judges composed of representatives from the city mayor’s office, Office of Councilor Yangot, DA-CAR, Department of Trade and Industry, and private entities.
Barangay community gardens with the officials as caretakers may join the contest, it was known.
The criteria for judging include visual appeal and impact; of color, texture and unique features such as decorative materials for an over-all effect to the viewer. Balance, arrangement and creativity using recyclable materials or biodegradable and organic fertilizer are also looked into by the judges.
Plant variety and health, maintenance by the urban gardener, and environmental stewardship through the landscape of edible garden showcase are considered.
