TABUK CITY, Kalinga – The City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO), in close cooperation with the Kalinga Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council, conducted water simulation activity along the Chico River in Magsaysay on December 14, 2023.
For the simulation activity, five individuals along the river were supposed to be reported by the barangay officials of Magsaysay as being stranded in the area. Through proper cooperation with authorities, these individuals were rescued by the CDRRMO together with the forces of the Provincial DRRMC, Philippine Army, Bureau of Fire Protection, Philippine National Police, City Health Services Office, and Magsaysay barangay.
According to CDRRMO Head Jeremias Ammakiw, the simulation activity was part of their emergency exercises purposely to capacitate available rescuers during disasters in the area, especially that part of barangay Magsaysay which is vulnerable to floods during strong typhoons.
Ammakiw, who was the commanding officer during the simulation activity, has smoothly led the exercise and emphasized the necessity for the residents to follow the orders of the authorities when there are forecasted typhoons.
Because of the adverse effects of climate change on the environment, he urged everyone to be resilient and to adapt to the situation around them, which is encountering different calamities.
He further explained that the city government under the leadership of Mayor Darwin Estrañero has been very committed to supporting emergency response programs.
With the aim of equipping the city for emergency response, several equipment and facilities were already procured to add to the existing facilities. By Ian Jefrey Addatu
