The Cordillera office of the National Nutrition Council (NNC-CAR) reported that ten towns in four provinces in the region recorded high stunting rates among children that warrant appropriate interventions from concerned government agencies and local governments.
Based on the data obtained from the NNC-CAR, Paracelis, Mountain Province topped the municipalities with the highest stunting among children in terms of magnitude with 557 kids followed by Flora, Apayao with 172; Pilar, Abra – 117; Sadanga, Mountain Province – 113; Tanudan, Kalinga – 103; Licuan-Baay – 74; Besao, Mountain Province – 65; Tineg, Abra – 62; Malibcong, Abra – 46 and San Isidro, Abra – 40.
In terms of prevalence, Licuan-Baay, Abra topped the list with a prevalence rate of 26.71 percent followed by Malibcong, Abra with a rate of 26.59; Sadanga- Mountain Province – 26.43 percent; Pilar, Abra – 21.08; Paracelis, Mountain Province – 20.11; Tineg, Abra – 18.08; Tanudan, Kalinga – 16.43; Besao, Mountain Province – 14.71; San Isidro, Abra – 14.29 and Flora, Apayao – 13.82.
On the other hand, the NNC-CAR also reported the top five barangays in Baguio City with the highest prevalence of underweight plus severely underweight based on the weight for age as a result of the Operation Timbang plus that was earlier undertaken in the city.
Quezon Hill Proper topped the list with a prevalence rate of 13.33 percent followed by Ferdindnd Marcos barangay with a rate of 7.63; Baguio General Hospital (BGH) Compound – 7.46; Lourdes Subdivision Extension – 6.02; Upper Rock Quarry -6.02; and Palma-Urbano – 5.77.
In terms of magnitude or the number of children that are underweight plus severely underweight, Irisan topped the list with 50 followed by Fairview barangay with 28; Asin road barangay – 17; Gibraltar and San Luis Village with 11 each and Ferdinand Marcos barangay – 9.
Further, Quezon Hill Proper topped the list of the city’s top five barangays with high prevalence of stunting among children composed of stunted and severely stunted based on the height for age with a prevalence rate of 17.78 percent followed by Lourdes Subdivision Extension with 16.8; Palma-Urbano – 15.38; Santa Escolastica Village – 15.07 and BGH Compound – 11.94 percent.
In terms of magnitude in the same classification, Irisan topped the list with 66 followed by Fairview with 35; St. Joseph Village and San Luis Village – 19 each; Gibraltar – 18; Lourdes Subdivision Extension – 14 and Asin Road barangay – 13.
For the prevalence of moderately wasted plus severely wasted children based on weight-length-height, Lourdes Subdivision Extension had the highest prevalence rate with 6.02 percent followed by Upper Gen. Luna – 2.44; Palma-Urbano – 1.92; Fairview – 1.89 and Hillside – 1.45.
In terms of magnitude, Fairview had the most number of moderately wasted plus severely wasted children with 10 followed by Lourdes Subdivision Extension with 5; Pacadal and Irisan – 4 each; Loakan Liwanag and Bakakeng Norte/Sur – 3 each and Upper Gen. Luna, Camp Allen and Happy Hallow – 2 each.
On the prevalence of obese children, Lourdes Subdivision Extension had the highest prevalence rate with 4.82 followed by Quezon Hill Proper – 4.44; Hillside – 4.35; Greenwater Village – 4.11 and Ferdinand Marcos barangay – 3.39.
In terms of magnitude, Fairview had the most number of overweight or obese children with 11 flowed by Kias with 6; San Vicente – 5; Lourdes Subdivision Extension, Ferdinand Marcos barangay, SLU-SVP, Ambiong, Gabriela Silang, Pacdal and Irisan – 4 each; Hillside, Greenwater Village, ATok Trail, Sto. Tomas Proper and Asin Road – 3 each.
In Benguet, Kapangan and La Trinidad had the highest prevalence rate of underweight children with 2.66 followed by Bakun with 2.36; Sablan – 1.54; Atok – 1.17; Kabayan – 1.45; Kibungan – 1.14; Tuba – 0.99; Mankayan – 0.73; Tublay – 0.69; Itogon – 0.55; Buguias – 0.33 and Bokod – 0.16.
In terms of magnitude, La Trinidad had the most number of underweight children with 297 followed by Tuba with 31; Kapangan – 30; Bakun – 27; Mankayan – 22; Itogon – 21; Atok, Kibungan and Kabayan – 16 each; Sablan and Tublay – 12 each; Buguias -11 and Bokod – 2.
For stunting, Kapangan had the highest prevalence rate with 11.60 followed by Kibungan with 9.84; Bakun – 7.95; La Trinidad – 7.87; Kabayan – 7.45; Atok – 7.43; Bokod – 5.36; Tuba – 4.18; Tublay – 3.59; Sablan – 2.56, Itogon – 1.47; Mankayan – 0.63 and Buguias – 0.60.
In terms of magnitude, La Trinidad had the highest number of stunted children with 877 followed by Kapangan and Kibungan with 132 each; Tuba – 131; Atok – 102; Bakun – 91; Kabayan – 82; Bokod – 67; Tublay – 62; Itogon – 56; Buguias and Sablan – 20 each and Mankayan – 19.
For moderately wasted children, La Trinidad had the highest prevalence rate with 1.39 followed by Bakun with 1.05; Tuba – 0.51; Kabayan – 0.36; Kapangan – 0.35; Mankayan – 0.33; Atok – 0.22; Itogon – 0.18; Bokod – 0.16; Sablan – 0.13Buguias – .09; and Kibungan and Tublay with no moderately wasted children.
In terms of magnitude, La Trinidad remains to have the highest number of moderately wasted children with 155 followed by Tuba with 16; Bakun – 12; Mankayan – 10; Itogon – 7; Kabayan and Kapangan – 4 each; Atok and Buguias – 3 each; Bokod – 2; Sablan -1 and Kibungan and Tublay with no moderately wasted children.
For overweight and obese children, La Trinidad had the highest prevalence are with 3.61 followed by Tuba with 3.10; Kabayan – 2.00; Bakun – 1.83; Sablan – 1.41; Kapangan – 1.24; Itogon – 1.21; Bokod – 0.72; Kibungan – 0.93; Tublay – 0.69; Atok – 0.44; Mankayan – 0.23 and Buguias with no overweight or obese children.
In terms of magnitude, La Trinidad had the highest number of overweight or obese children with 402 followed by Tuba with 97; Itogon – 46; Kabayan – 22; Bakun – 21; Kapangan – 14; Tublay and Kibungan – 12 each; Sablan – 11; Mankayan – 7; Atok – 6 and Buguias with no overweight or obese children.
