BAGUIO CITY – Some one thousand calamity-stricken families in this city and the neighboring town of La Trinidad, Benguet benefitted from the series of relief operations conducted by the management of SM City Baguio and SM Foundation after the onslaught of Supertyphoon Lawin that struck Northern Luzon last week.
SM City Baguio and SM Foundation personnel distributed some 500 food packs to the calamity survivors in Irisan, the families of the caddies of the Baguio Country Club and Camp John Hay and the mall employees while the other 500 food packs were distributed to the calamity survivors in barangays Puguis, Alapang and Ambiong.
Each food pack contains several kilos of rice, noodles, canned goods and bottled water, enough to provide food for the survivors while awaiting other assistance.
SM management identified the beneficiaries in coordination with the City Government of Baguio and the La Trinidad Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (MDRRMC).
Tropical Cyclone Signal No. 3 was hoisted over Baguio city and Benguet from Wednesday afternoon up to Thursday morning last week where the strength of the supertyphoon was felt resulting to damages on dozens of houses in the said areas.
SM management expressed its sympathy with the survivors of Supertyphoon Lawin not only in the region but also in other parts of Northern Luzon with the hope that they will be able to recover from the damages they suffered due to the strongest typhoon that ever hit Luzon for decades.
“The resilience of Filipinos to rise up from disasters that strike them was again put to an acid test following the onslaught of Supertyphoon Lawin. We are optimistic that with the blessings of our Almighty Father, we will be able to hurdle other obstacles that confront us in our efforts to uplift the living condition of our respective families,” the SM management stated.
It will be recalled that SM City Baguio and SM Foundation had been regularly conducting relief operations to calamity survivors affected by weather disturbances in Baguio and Benguet over the past several years as part of their corporate social responsibility, especially in comforting the survivors of natural and man-made calamities.
The giant chain of malls and is foundation assured the public that it will continue to be mindful of the needs of calamity survivors, especially in heavily devastated areas, to help them recover from the wrath of natural and man-made calamities.
SM City Baguio started its full-scale operations sometime in November 2003 after several years of undergoing the construction stage when it was able to acquire the property through a competitive bidding undertaken by the environment department sometime in April 1992. By HENT
