BAGUIO CITY – The scenic landscapes and rich cultural heritage of the Cordillera region have long captivated the hearts of travelers from across the globe. Nestled amidst the lush mountains of the Philippines, this region holds immense potential for tourism-driven economic growth and development. Recognizing this, the Department of Tourism-Cordillera (DOT-CAR) initiated the Cordillera Regional Tourism Investment Forum 2024, held at the Cordillera Convention Hall, Baguio Country Club, Baguio City, on April 2, 2024.
The forum theme, “Elevating Opportunities: Sustainable Investments in Mountain Tourism,” underscored the urgent need to harness the region’s tourism potential while ensuring environmental preservation and socio-cultural integrity. The event brought together government officials, industry leaders, investors, and stakeholders to discuss strategies for sustainable tourism development in the Cordilleras.
In his supportive address, Congressman Marquez Go emphasized the allure of the Cordillera region and the pivotal role of Baguio City as its gateway. “Baguio City has served as the gateway to the Cordilleras, beckoning visitors to come and see more of what our region offers. Baguio City’s strategic location, wealth of cultural heritage and resources, engaging weather, and reputation for commerce and education presents a massive amount of potential for the city to become a truly world-class metropolis that enables key and strategic investments in the region.”
Acknowledging the challenges of rapid tourism growth, Congressman Go addressed issues such as congestion, environmental degradation, and strained infrastructure. “Some of our local areas have now become congested. Traffic has worsened and continues to bring Baguio to a standstill with the arrival of droves of tourists during the holidays.”
“Facilities, sites, and attractions that have been worn out and dilapidated over time are unable to pursue a much-needed rehabilitation and restoration due to the constant influx of crowds notwithstanding the current efforts of our local government units,” he added.
Congressman Go emphasized the importance of striking a balance between economic progress and environmental sustainability to ensure the region’s long-term prosperity.
Echoing these sentiments, Christina Garcia Frasco, Secretary of the Department of Tourism-Cordillera, underscored the forum’s significance in fostering collaboration and innovation toward sustainable tourism development. “Aligned with the Department’s overarching objective of enhancing connectivity, convenience, and equality as outlined in the National Tourism Development Plan 2023 -2028, this forum serves as a vital platform for stakeholders to converge, discuss, and partake in thriving investment opportunities in tourism.”
She underscored the region’s potential as a tourism powerhouse, citing its rich cultural heritage and resilient economy.
Secretary Frasco called for collective action to leverage tourism to catalyze positive change and inclusive growth in the Cordilleras. “We envision tourism not merely as an engine of investment but as a catalyst for sustainable development, a source of gainful employment, and a platform for promoting sustainable business practices.”
“Let us embrace the spirit of collaboration and innovation as we embark on this journey towards sustainable tourism development in the Cordilleras and across the new Philippines, “Bagong Pilipinas,” where nobody and no destination will be left behind.” Secretary Frasco said.
Throughout the forum, various speakers presented insights and strategies to drive sustainable regional tourism investment topics ranging from investment priorities and tourism infrastructure to digital innovation and public-private partnerships. Notable presentations included unveiling the National Tourism and Development Plan 2023-2028, discussions on investment incentives, and presentations on airport gateway programs and digital connectivity initiatives.
The forum served as a platform for stakeholders to exchange ideas, share best practices, and explore investment opportunities aligned with sustainable tourism principles. The event aimed to lay the groundwork for a vibrant and resilient tourism industry in the Cordilleras by fostering collaboration between government agencies, private sector entities, and local communities.
As the forum concluded, participants expressed their commitment to advancing sustainable regional tourism development and pledged to prioritize environmental conservation, community empowerment, and inclusive growth in their tourism initiatives.
Congressman Go concluded with optimism, emphasizing all stakeholders’ collective responsibility to ensure the tourism industry’s success. “Let us remember that the success of our tourism industry depends on all of us, government, private sector, civil society, and local communities, working together towards a common goal. Together, we can elevate opportunities, create sustainable investments, and build a brighter future for the Cordilleras.”
“May this forum be a catalyst for transformative change and sustainable growth in our region’s sector, particularly tourism,” he stressed.
