CALANASAN, Apayao – The Local Government Unit (LGU) of Calanasan has initiated preparations for the opening of Mt. Sicapoo to mountaineering activities, adding another gem to the province’s roster of tourist destinations.
Seated like a queen huddled amongst the pristine Cordillera mountain range, this untouched and unspoiled beauty straddles the borders of Kabugao and Calanasan municipalities, with a portion extending into Ilocos Norte.
Towering at 2,354 Meters Above Sea Level (MASL), Mt. Sicapoo stands as the highest peak in Apayao and Ilocos Norte. With a daunting difficulty rating of 9/9, it offers an appealing challenge to experienced hikers seeking technical climbs.
The allure of reaching the summit’s iconic landmark, known as the penguin, has drawn the attention of many mountaineers.
Finally recognizing the potential of Mt. Sicapoo as a tourist destination, the LGU Calanasan has set off on an expedition to unlock its marvel to the world.
On March 5-9, 2024, in collaboration with the Provincial Tourism Services Office (PTSO), LGU Calanasan organized the Apayao Trail Expedition, aiming to initially map out the trails of this untamed giant.
“Trail expedition yung ginawa namin tapos may reconnaissance nitong semana pero yung mga mountaineers na lang at guides ang pupunta,” Provincial Tourism Officer Rebecca T. Mamba said in an interview adding that once all preparations are in place, “we will open it for tourism activities.”
Meanwhile, Calanasan Tourism Operations Officer Vail Boday disclosed plans for conducting basic mountaineering courses and initiating systematic planning with the PTSO and other concerned agencies to ensure that the natural integrity of Mt. Sicapoo remains preserved for generations to come.
As Mt. Sicapoo’s tourism debut draws near, excitement and anticipation fill the mountaineering community. With each step taken towards the summit, a new chapter in Apayao adventure tourism unfolds, inviting all who dare to heed the call of the wild. By JCM
