TABUK CITY, Kalinga – European Union Ambassador to the Philippines Luc Véron paid homage to the rich culture of Kalinga as he commenced his four-day visit to the province during the welcome reception prepared by the provincial government on January 22 at M Hotel.
“We look very much forward to witnessing the richness of your culture, the vibrancy of your dances, the intricacy of your hard work and the deep connection to your ancestral roots,” he said.
The ambassador is set to meet with National Living Treasure for Music and Dance awardee Alonzo Saclag and Dangal ng Haraya awardee for Intangible Cultural Heritage, traditional tattoo artist Apo Whang-od.
“I’m especially excited for the chance to meet two of the Philippines’ national treasures, Alonzo Saclag and apo whang-od. Their contribution to preserving and promoting indigenous art and culture is truly remarkable. I look forward to continue to learn from them and to be inspired by their wisdom and talent,” he said.
Ambassador Veron also highlighted the strong and positive relations between the Philippines and the European Union saying that the partnership has fostered economic growth, enhanced education and skills development, and promoted cultural understanding between the EU and the Philippines.
Governor James S. Edduba called the visit as a momentous occasion as it reflects the importance of connecting with the diverse culture and community of Kalinga which is predominantly composed of indigenous peoples with a rich cultural heritage and peace-loving people.
“Tonight, as we celebrate this fellowship, we take pride in showcasing the warmth and camaraderie that characterize the heart of the Kalinga people. Our unique traditions, vibrant arts and the welcoming spirit of our people are treasures and we are delighted to share them with you,” he said.
Ambassador Veron who is accompanied by his wife Nicole Weissman; Cynthia Hendaoui, Attaché; and Michiko Quinto, Assistant to the Political Section, will also meet with elected leaders of Tabuk City, Lubuagan, and Pasil. By Jayson Antonio
