MANKAYAN, Benguet – The team of Lepanto Safety Mine Division demonstrated handling of trauma and medical emergencies at Mankayan National High School on November 8 in preparation of the Mine Safety Field Demonstration and Field Competition during the 65th Annual Mine Safety and Environment Conference in Baguio City on November 20-23.
Arnel Viernes, the team coach, differentiated trauma from medical emergencies. “Trauma is related to life-threatening injuries like lacerations, fracture and deformities in the upper and lower extremities while medical emergencies include hypertension, heart attack, convulsion and emergency medical child delivery.” “Our demo is based on Red Cross Standard series of 2015 which contends that application of CPR is around 25% in reviving a patient hence the use of Automated External Defibrillator is encouraged”, he added.
Three mining engineers- Rogelio Nieva, Jeston Baniaga and Frenoel Manongod together with the members of the safety department- Rhoger Velasco, Rodel Laciste, Johnny Wanchacan, Fernando Punga and Frederick Arawig composed the team.
Moreover, it took the team seven minutes to apply artificial respiration, control loss of blood, revive the victim’s consciousness, manage wounds, dislocations and fractures and transfer the victim properly. Hypothetically, the victim clearing the mudslide along Halsema fell and obtained fracture on the left leg and lacerations in the abdomen and other extremities.
Reportedly, AnMSEC is the biggest gathering in the mining industry which Philippine Mine Safety and Environment Association spearheads yearly to promote occupational safety and health, sound environmental management and social responsibility in the Minerals Industry.
This year’s theme is “65 Years of Responsible Mining Industry and Regulator Together in Promoting and Advocating Responsible Mining” where contractors, student, teachers, professors in mining and related fields, professional organizations, community development officials and employees are invited. Other activities include Minerals Industry Symposium, Sportsfest, Mining Exhibit, NAMINA Congress and Annual Awards Night.
