LA TRINIDAD, Benguet – The municipal government will be putting an end to the hauling of its residual waste to the Urdaneta City, Pangasinan sanitary landfill in time for the completion of cell No. 3 of the town’s Alno controlled dump facility.
Mayor Romeo K. Salda claimed that based on the volume of waste generated in the municipality daily, the cell No. 3 of the Alno dumpsite could be used for a maximum of 3 years, thus, the need for the local government to already start rehabilitating and improving cell No. 4 of the dumpsite so that it will be immediately used as soon as cell No. 3 will be filled up.
“We will try our best to complete the rehabilitation of cell No. 3 the soonest so that we can already stop the hauling of our residual waste to the Urdaneta City landfill. Hauling of garbage was our immediate solution to prevent the piling up of our solid waste in the municipality while awaiting for the completion of the rehabilitation of our dumpsite’s cell No. 3,”Mayor Salda stressed.
The local chief executive underscored that it is important for the residents to actively participate in the local government’s solid waste disposal campaign by making sure that they maximize the disposal of their biodegradable waste in their backyard to reduce the volume of waste being dumped in the facility and lessen the expense of the municipality in the hauling of garbage outside the town.
According to him, the lifespan of cell No. 4 of the Alno dumpsite is about 8 years but its rehabilitation will take a longer period of time, thus, the need for the local government to start implementing the projects that have been programmed on a staggered basis so that it will be completed right in time when cell no. 3 will be filled up and the same could be immediately utilized without resorting to hauling of the town’s generated residual waste.
Problems being encountered by the municipal government’s trucks in their disposal of the residual waste in the said facility.
One of the programs that will be strengthened by the local government, according to Mayor Salda, is the enhancement of the town’s Bantay Basura program wherein there will be greater participation among the residents and the implementers on initiatives to contribute in significantly reducing the volume of resident waste that will be hauled out of the municipality and lessen the expenses for the said undertaking.
Aside from La Trinidad, the other local governments that opted to temporarily haul out their generated residual waste outside their areas of jurisdiction include Baguio City and Tuba considering the reported enormous growth in the volume of garbage by the increasing number of inhabitants in the said places due to migration of people from the rural areas to search for greener pasture.
Salda expressed confidence that the local government will be able to significantly reduce the volume of garbage that will be dumped in its Alno controlled dump facility once its cell No. 3 will be fully operational by next month after all the needed works shall have been completed because residents will be aware of their obligation in doing their share in reducing the generated waste at source through segregation among other initiatives.
