In November 2013, something big was about to happen in my career as a writer. I was excited but amidst the beaming ray of excitement, there was a shadow of doubt. “Am I ready to put this out? What will happen once it is published? Am I ready to make myself and my stories public?”
These were my questions as I was about to publish my first book The Gift of the Ordinary.
As I received the final book cover design, I was so thrilled but also terrified. I told myself, “Putting this book out there will make me vulnerable to critics. I will open myself to scrutiny – not only on how I write but also on how I live my life.”
I was so excited but also reluctant.
For some days, I didn’t know what to do.
The thought of becoming vulnerable scared me.
Until the day of definitive courage came when I said, “Alright. I’m ready. This book is going to come out in December.”
Days later, I was overjoyed when I received the testimonial from none other than the bestselling author, whom I consider a great mentor – Bo Sanchez. He said, “Nothing beats simple stories and powerful lessons. Thanks Chris for unwrapping your gift and serving it to the world.”
As I read his message in my inbox, I got so excited that I started jumping up and down.
In December 2013, the book was published.
Occasionally, I would pick up the book and read it. Every time I do so, I feel two things. First, I feel shy because of some errors I missed to correct. But second, I also feel happy and fulfilled.
Readers say they were moved and inspired. Some even say they also want to write their book. Others say they were equipped again and empowered.
I realized that the book resonated not because of excellent use or rather the wrong usage of grammar. It is not even because of what my hero, Bo, said. But it was because of the message I shared – because I spoke up.
My friend, you will never know what will happen until you do it. You will never know how far you can grow until you start it. You will never know that impact you will make until you speak up.
What is your message? What is that story you need to share at work or in the community? Speak it out. You will never know the change it will create until you do it.
So, speak! Craft and deliver the speech or presentation you ought to give.
