KABUGAO, Apayao – One of the remaining sanctuaries of the endangered Philippine Eagle is Apayao Province and on March 16, one was rescued from the wilderness in Kabugao by a 38-year-old resident of the town who discovered the eagle ensnared in a trap and made the decision to safely capture the bird and notify the authorities.
He has been providing the eagle with sustenance, primarily in the form of duck meat throughout its stay with him.
Consequently, the bird was entrusted to the care of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), and the Philippine Eagle Foundation (PEF). Upon reaching full recovery, it will be reintegrated into its natural habitat.
It can be recalled that PEF discovered a Philippine Eagle nest in Calanasan in 2015 followed by another notable event in 2016 when a Philippine Eagle (named Ingagan) was rescued near the Tawit River in Pudtol town.
Likewise, Apayao is actively pursuing recognition as a UNESCO Biodiversity and Protected Area aiming to preserve the virgin forests to ensure the continued existence of an eagle sanctuary that can support the thriving and multiplication of the Philippine Eagle population.
With the latest rescue, Apayao is putting more effort in its bid to protect its environment, especially its forests.
`Governor Elias C. Bulut Jr., a staunch advocate of environmental and biodiversity protection, has over the years implemented measures and policies to safeguard Apayao’s natural resources encouraging his people to take part in conserving nature for the next generations to come. By Jc Marquez
