As I reflect on a post I made on Facebook a year ago about a victorious event that happened in October 20, 2021, I am filled with gratitude for the unity that has brought us this far and at the same time reminded of its profound effects. It was a testament to the power of collective action. However, as we recall that time, we must ask ourselves: is the spirit of unity and determination we witnessed still alive today in our mission to protect BENECO? Are the MCOs, LGUs, and civic organizations still committed to this cause? The truth is, the war for the protection of BENECO is far from over, as our cooperative faces numerous battles in every facet of its existence.
The success of BENECO cannot be attributed to the efforts of one set of individuals alone. It is the collaborative endeavors of everyone who genuinely cares about BENECO that have propelled its growth and development.
We often proudly proclaim that BENECO is ours, but the question that nags at us is whether we are actively doing what it takes to protect it. Even more disheartening is the fact that some among us are forcibly sabotaging the efforts of those who have contributed to its legacy. Some individuals appear to champion the cause of the cooperative while secretly pursuing their own self-interest. In reality, they are primarily safeguarding their own status, influence, or financial gain. Rather than protecting BENECO, they will use the cooperative as a shield to hide personal motives. They manipulate others, exploit trust, and pursue personal gain under the guise of safeguarding the organization’s welfare. It’s vital that we remain vigilant and discerning, ensuring that those advocating for BENECO genuinely prioritize its best interests over personal agendas.
BENECO is celebrating its 50 years of existence, five decades of improving the lives of the people in Baguio and Benguet. It has not only illuminated our homes but also paved the path to progress and prosperity in our province. However, as the expiration of BENECO’s franchise approaches, it is crucial that we reunite in solidarity to show our unwavering support. Let us prove that even amidst our diversity of beliefs, opinions, and philosophies, we must remain united for our home, for BENECO, our last frontier, to prevent the “divide and conquer” strategy from destroying our collective efforts.
Reflecting on the events of October 20, 2021, we find inspiration in the motto, “All for one and one for all, united we stand, divided we fall.” This motto beautifully encapsulates the essence of the events that transpired two years ago. It’s a fitting mantra for the individuals who went to great lengths to restore the cooperative to its rightful hands.
In a world where opposing ideals and contrasting ideas often lead to division, it can become increasingly challenging to believe in the existence of unity. However, October 20, 2021, stands as a powerful testament to the contrary. It exemplified the true meaning of unity and cooperation, proving that when people from different backgrounds, walks of lives, and beliefs come together for a common cause, remarkable achievements can be realized.
The battle may have been won on that momentous day, but the war for BENECO’s protection continues. As we celebrate BENECO’s golden jubilee, let us continue to stand together and be reminded that we are all in this together. It’s a constant reminder that unity is our strength, division is our weakness, and the common good should always be our guiding principle.
So, as BENECO’s future hangs in the balance, let us apply the lessons learned from the past to the present. Let us demonstrate once more that unity, even in diversity, remains our greatest asset, and for the sake of our home, our BENECO, we must stand united, putting aside individual discrepancies and personal agendas in favor of greater welfare. This is our cooperative, and we must protect it, all for one and one for all. By Leigh Belac
