Owen is known for being technically competent. He performs well in his tasks.
“He is due for promotion, right?” Sarah asked.
His supervisor replied, “Oh yes, I admire his technical know-how. But I don’t know why he does not seem to connect with his teammates; and he does not like to lead project teams even on short term basis. He even hesitates to present during meetings yet when I see the presentation slides he made, they were fantastic.”
There are many people who are like Owen. They are missing out on their potential. They are missing out on possibilities. They are missing out on an even higher performance they can bring in. They are missing out because they forget to develop their public speaking and interpersonal skills.
I say this because I was like Owen. I had all those hesitations to interact with other people, to accept leadership roles, and to speak or present before an audience. And I know that I missed a lot on the benefits of connecting with others, of leading a group, and to speak or present when the situation requires.
It is not too late for Owen as it was not for me. He can turn the wheels around if he chooses to. He can learn how to connect with his team mates if he chooses to. He can lead project teams and influence his people if he chooses to. He can grow in his leadership and communication skills if he chooses to. He can learn to speak and present to groups or even large audiences with confidence.
