City officials congratulated and commended the Baguio City athletes and their coach for winning in the 16th Association of Southeast Asian nations (ASEAN) taekwondo championships held last March 10-12, 2023 at the Ayala Malls, Manila Bay, Paranaque City.
In a resolution authored by Councilor Arthur Allad-iw, local legislators stated that the achievements of the city’s taekwondo athletes yet again proves that Baguio city is a home of world class athletes thereby giving pride and honor to the city and the country as well.
Earlier, the 16th ASEAN Taekwondo championships was hosted by the Philippines at the Ayala Malls, Manila Bay, Paranaque City Last March 10-12, 2023.
This tournament was actively participated by some 383 athletes, officials and international referees from the 8 country-member associations such as Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Vietnam and Laos.
Further, the 3-day biennial event served as the preparation for the upcoming Cambodia Southeast Asian Games in May 2023.
During the competition, 6 taekwondo athletes from Baguio City with the guidance of their coach won in their respective categories.
The winning athletes were Joshua Aaron Erece, gold medalist in the junior individuals poomsae and the junior male team poomsae; Acey Kiana Oglayon, gold medalist in the freestyle under 17 mixed pair poomsae and silver medalist in the freestyle under 17 mixed team; Aesha Kiara Oglayon, gold medalist in the junior team female poonsae; Justin Paul Atienza, silver medalist in the junior male light heavyweight; Rihanna Kate Caguioa, silver medalist in the junior female fin weight and Kurtney Lexanne Calderon, bronze medalist in the junior female lightweight.
The coach of the team who guided the athletes during the competition was Arnold M. Oglayon.
The council claimed these athletes garnered 4 gold, 3 silver and 1 bronze medals making the team one of the most bemedaled groups that joined the tournament.
