SANTA MARCELA, Apayao – Some 93 drivers and operators of the Santa Marcela Tricycle Drivers and Operators Association (SMTODA), and 33 electricians of the Santa Marcela Electricians Organization (SMEO) received a boost to their livelihood on December 11, 2023, as the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) Apayao distributed livelihood assistance at the EKB Sport Center, San Carlos.
This initiative aimed to alleviate the financial strain caused by the recent surge in fuel prices in the country, particularly affecting those in the transportation sector. The relentless rise in gasoline costs has posed significant challenges for tricycle operators, who are grappling with increased operational expenses. Consequently, their income and profitability have witnessed a decline. As tricycle drivers navigate the impact of escalating fuel prices, some coping strategies adopted may lead to long-term harm and counterproductivity.
Despite the government’s efforts to implement policies addressing soaring gasoline costs, it is crucial to ensure that vulnerable tricycle drivers, bearing the brunt of these price hikes, are well-informed about these initiatives.
In this regard, 93 recipients from the SMTODA received financial assistance totaling PhP552,504, offering them a much-needed lifeline, while the DOLE Apayao office extended support to 33 beneficiaries of the SMEO, providing assistance amounting to PhP254,536.
This DOLE-backed project specifically targets the SMTODA auto repair services and shop, along with the Electrical Services and Installation of the SMEO. The primary goal is to create sustainable income and job opportunities for association members by offering electrical and motor shop services and supplies.
Jane Y. Adalan, the Provincial Head of DOLE, expressed optimism about the impact of this assistance, stating, “We hope that this modest amount of support will enable beneficiaries to generate more income and potentially lead to increased employment, contributing to the economic progress of the locality through the provision of electrical services and supplies and motor shop services and supplies in the municipality of Santa Marcela.” She also acknowledged the ongoing support of Governor Elias C. Bulut, Jr., and Congressman Eleanor C. Bulut-Begtang’s office in realizing DOLE programs and services in the province. By Krizza Castillo
