SAN FERNANDO CITY, La Union– The Police Regional Office 1 (PRO 1) is taking a significant step towards inclusivity and respect for human rights with the groundbreaking ceremony of a gender-neutral and persons with disability (PWD)-sensitive comfort room.
Police Brigadier General Lou Evangelista, PRO 1 regional director, led the ceremony held on Tuesday, emphasizing the project’s significance not just as infrastructure development, but as a symbol of PRO 1’s commitment to diversity and inclusivity.
“This initiative highlights our commitment to providing safe and accessible facilities for all members of the police force and the community we serve,” PBGEN Evangelista stated.
The new comfort room features separate areas for males, females, and PWDs, ensuring everyone’s comfort.
Additionally, a dedicated room caters specifically to the needs of the LGBTQI+ community, demonstrating respect and recognition of their unique experiences.
A poignant moment during the ceremony involved burying a time capsule.
This symbolic act serves as a message to future generations, preserving the bravery, courage, and dedication of PRO 1 peacemakers who once stood on that very ground.
“The ceremony marks a significant step towards fostering diversity, equity, and inclusivity within law enforcement in Region 1, our safe homeland,” PBGEN Evangelista added.
With this groundbreaking initiative, PRO 1 sets a strong example for other organizations to follow.
Community members applaud the move.
Jim James Pablico, a member of the LGBTQI+ community, said, “It’s a bold move, especially from a traditionally ‘masculine’ agency. The recognition is highly commendable.”
Jennifer Garcia, co-convenor of the Philippine Coalition on the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, said, “This is a commendable effort towards inclusivity and respect for human rights. It demonstrates a commitment to serving everyone, including those with disabilities.”
Garcia further commended the initiative for setting a strong example and paving the way for a more just society.
She also recommended incorporating sustainability measures for long-term impact and environmental responsibility.
